Longs Drugs Challenge Sponsor Exemptions Given to Stacy Lewis and Kim Welch

Danville, Calif. –The Longs Drugs Challenge announced the sponsor exemptions for this year’s tournament. Stacy Lewis and Kim Welch will compete in the field of 108 for the 2008 Longs Drugs Challenge.

Lewis, the #1 ranked amateur in 2007 and 2008, finished third at this year’s U.S. Women’s Open in her first event as a professional. A native of The Woodlands, Texas, she was the 2007 NCAA Champion before graduating from the University of Arkansas. This season, she has earned over $30,000 on tour and is attempting to become the first player to earn an LPGA Tour card through sponsor exemptions. She needs to earn $120,000 total to reach this goal.

Welch, a Sacramento, California native, is a 2005 graduate of Washington State University, where she earned All-American honors. She is the winner of the Big Break Ka’anapali on the Golf Channel this year and finished 21st on the Duramed FUTURES Tour Money List last year.

"We are very excited to have players of the caliber of Stacy Lewis and Kim Welch accept sponsor exemptions for the 2008 Longs Drugs Challenge", said Tournament Director Brian Flajole. "Stacy has had a tremendous amateur career and is off to a great start as a professional. And Kim’s victory on this year’s Big Break is a major accomplishment. They are representative of the type of person that Longs Drugs supports and we are happy to have them competing in the Longs Drugs Challenge."

One of the favorite stops of the players on the LPGA Tour, the 2008 Longs Drugs Challenge will take place at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, California the week of October 9-12. The picturesque course will be the backdrop as 108 players take aim at a purse of $1.2 million over the four-round event. This is the third year the event has been held in the Bay-Area.

The event boasts a prestigious list of winners including defending champion Suzann Pettersen, San Jose’s Christina Kim, winner in 2004, and two-time champion and LPGA Hall of Famer Juli Inkster.

Tickets for the 2008 Longs Drugs Challenge are available now. Single-day passes for any of the four tournament rounds are $20 each. In addition, a $5 discount coupon may be obtained at select Bay Area-Longs Drugs outlets.
